My Story

Greetings! My name is Cori Jacobs, and I am honored to serve as Miss South Carolina Plus America 2024. My platform, "Call it a Spade: Motherhood's a Gamble", is close to my heart because it speaks directly to my personal journey and my passion for supporting new and expectant mothers facing the often-overlooked struggles of postpartum  and perinatal depression. As a mother who has experienced these challenges firsthand, I am dedicated to advocating for better healthcare options and building a stronger, more supportive community for women navigating this critical time in their lives.

Statistics tell us that approximately 1 in 7 women experience postpartum depression, and the numbers are even higher for perinatal mood disorders. Yet, so many of these women suffer in silence, with little to no support and limited access to effective care. I know this pain all too well. After the birth of my son, Ace, I found myself battling both perinatal and severe postpartum depression. There were days  I felt completely isolated, overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn for help. I was fortunate to find the right support and treatment, but so many women don't have access to the same resources.

This is why my reign as Miss South Carolina Plus America is dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of postpartum and perinatal depression and advocating for better healthcare options. Too many women are let to navigate this emotional journey alone, and too often, the healthcare system isn't equipped to offer the holistic support needed for recovery. I hope to change that by connecting women to resources, building communities of support, and promoting awareness that no woman should feel like she is fighting this battle on her own.

One of my primary goals is to advocate for more accessible and comprehensive healthcare for new mothers. Postpartum depression is not just a "bad day" after childbirth--it is a real, medical condition that can severely impact a mother's mental and physical health. By pushing for policy changes and better healthcare practices, I hope to ensure that all women have access to mental health support that is holistic and treats the whole person-- not just their symptoms. In addition to healthcare reform, I want to focus on building a network of support for mothers facing perinatal and postpartum depression. This means connecting women with local resources, peer support groups, and mental health professionals who truly understand the unique challenges new mothers face. Together, we can create a compassionate and empowering community where women feel heard, supported and validated.

When I'm not advocating for maternal mental health, I enjoy spending quality time with my 2-year-old son, Ace. He's the light of my life, and being his mommy is the greatest joy I could ask for! I also find solace in painting, listening to music and discovering new artists. Time with friends and family is something I cherish deeply and you'll often find me enjoying a good meal surrounded by the people I love.

As I embark on this journey as Miss South Carolina Plus America 2024, I am more committed than ever to raising awareness about postpartum and perinatal depression, and I am more than eager to be apart of the change that's needed. But I can't do it alone--I need your support. Whether it's sharing my story, supporting my platform, or helping raise awareness, every little bit counts. Together, we can create a world where every mother has the care and community she deserves.

Thank you for joining me on this mission, your support means everything!
